Returning (Go home / Go back)

Saying you will go back somewhere: is it the place you belong, or a spot you had left and are now reversing to?

Noun に 戻ります vs Noun に 帰ります: Reach for 戻る when you are reversing to a place or state you had left: back to your desk, back to the previous page, back to how things were. 帰る is for returning to a place you belong (home, your hometown, your country), so 家に戻る makes home sound like a spot you are retracing to rather than where you actually belong.
