Explanation

This grammar point is used when the speaker wants to emphasize the lengths they would go to in order to achieve something. It attaches to the verb's て-form to mean 'even if it means doing X', 'even at the cost of X', or 'no matter what it takes'.

Example sentences

• 試験に合格するために、寝る時間を削ってまでも勉強します。

  I will study to pass the exam, even if it means cutting down on sleep.

  Shiken ni gōkaku suru tame ni, neru jikan o kezutte mademo benkyō shimasu.

• 彼女と結婚できるなら、どんな苦労をしてまでもお金を貯めたい。

  If I can marry her, I'll save money no matter what hardships it takes.

  Kanojo to kekkon dekiru nara, donna kurō o shite mademo okane o tametai.

• この会社で働きたいので、長時間かけてまでも通います。

  Because I want to work at this company, I'll commute even if it means spending hours traveling.
