Verb-masenka

An invitation or suggestion; 'won't you', 'why don't you', 'shall we'.

Slightly more polite/deferential "won't you..." - invites without presuming agreement.

Formation

Explanation

The ませんか grammar point is used for making invitations or suggestions in a polite manner. The verb is conjugated to its ます form and replaced with ませんか. This can be translated as 'won't you', 'why don't you', or 'shall we' in English.

Example sentences

  • Won't you watch a movie together with me?

    Issho ni eiga wo mimasenka.

  • Why don't you join tomorrow's party?

    Ashita no paatii ni sanka shimasenka.

  • Shall we go for a picnic on the weekend?

    Shuumatsu ni pikunikku ni ikimasenka.
