だけど

When to use

だ + けど, used after nouns/na-adjectives instead of bare けど. Same register as けど.

Explanation

The だけど grammar point is used to express a contrast or contradiction between two statements. In written or spoken Japanese, だけど is often placed at the start of a new sentence (after a period) to mean 'however'. Within a single sentence, speakers often just say けど without だ.

• 試験しけんに合格ごうかくしたけど、まだ勉強べんきょうしなければならない。

  I passed the exam, but I still have to study.

  Shiken ni goukaku shita kedo, mada benkyou shinakereba naranai.

• この部屋へやは広ひろいけど、家賃やちんが高たかいです。
