Formation

Verb-て + まま, い-Adjective + のまま, な-Adjective + なまま, Noun + のまま

Act according to; leave as is; unchanged.

When to use

ままに: just as something dictates (言われるままに), following it.

Explanation

The ～ままに grammar point is used to express leaving something in its current state or doing something exactly as is. It can also imply doing something naturally or without altering the circumstances. Depending on the part of speech, different particles are used: Verb-て + まま, い-Adjective + のまま, な-Adjective + なまま, Noun + のまま.

Example sentences

子供こどもが寝ているままに、静しずかに部屋へやを出でました。

I quietly left the room while the child was still sleeping.

Kodomo ga nete iru mama ni, shizuka ni heya o demashita.
窓まどが開ひらいたままで、寒さむくなりました。
