Formation

Verb-ますstem + っぱなし

Indicate a state where an action is left as is (unchanged or unfinished).

When to use

ます stem + っぱなし: left that way, carelessly not undone (開けっぱなし).

Explanation

The ～っぱなし grammar point is used to express that an action happened and was left in that state, unattended or unchanged. It is formed by taking the ます-stem of a verb and adding ～っぱなし.

Example sentences

窓まどを開けっぱなしにすると、虫むしが入はいってくる。

If you leave the window open, bugs will come in.

Mado o akeppanashi ni suru to, mushi ga haitte kuru.
洗濯物せんたくものを干ほしっぱなしで、雨あめに濡ぬれた。

I left the laundry hanging out, and it got wet in the rain.

Sentakumono o hoshippanashi de, ame ni nureta.
彼かれはドアを開けっぱなしにして出でかけた。

He went out leaving the door open.
