Formation

Verb-て-form + はいけない

Expresses prohibition; 'must not', 'cannot'.

When to use

Everyday prohibition; common in daily instructions and rules (including for children) - less stiff than てはならない.

Explanation

The ～てはいけない grammar point is used to express strict prohibition or something that must not be done. It can be translated as 'must not', 'cannot', or 'should not' in English. It is formed by adding て-form of a verb followed by はいけない.

Example sentences

公園こうえんでたばこを吸すってはいけない。

You must not smoke in the park.

Kouen de tabako o sutte wa ikenai.
ここで写真しゃしんを撮とってはいけない。

You cannot take pictures here.

Koko de shashin o totte wa ikenai.
図書館としょかんで大きな声こえを出だしてはいけない。

You must not speak loudly in the library.

Toshokan de ookina koe o dashite wa ikenai.
バスの中なかで立たっている人ひとに席せきを譲ゆずってはいけない。(Note: Unusual in real life, but grammatically correct.)

You should not give up your seat to someone standing on the bus. (Note: Odd in actual social context, but valid grammar.)
