Explanation

The ～としても grammar point is used to say ‘even if...’ or ‘even assuming that...’, often followed by a conclusion or stance. It’s similar to ～ても, but puts more emphasis on the hypothetical assumption or viewpoint.

Example sentences

• 雨が降るとしても、レースは中止しません。

  Even if it rains, we won't cancel the race.

  Ame ga furu to shite mo, rēsu wa chūshi shimasen.

• このケーキが美味しくないとしても、私は食べるつもりです。

  Even if this cake isn't delicious, I plan on eating it.

  Kono kēki ga oishikunai to shite mo, watashi wa taberu tsumori desu.

• 彼女が遅刻するとしても、私たちは待ち続けます。

  Even if she is late, we will keep waiting.

  Kanojo ga chikoku suru to shite mo, watashitachi wa machitsuzukemasu.

• 忙しいだとしても、友達との約束は守りたい。
